Michigan Catholics for the Common Good: Organizational By-Laws



These By-laws were adopted with the unanimous consent at the MCCG Board meeting on February 1, 2007 at OAK PARK, MICHIGAN 48237. Amendments were accepted at the Board of Directors meeting of February 8, 2010.

Article I—Name

The name of the organization shall be: Michigan Catholics for the Common Good

Article II—Purpose

The mission of Michigan Catholics for the Common Good is to promote fuller awareness in the Catholic community of the ways in which Catholic Social Teaching addresses public policy issues, especially those affecting economic justice. We do this through research, education and action.

Article III—Membership

Membership in MCCG shall be open to all individuals and organizations committed to the above purpose. There shall be both individual and organizational membership. Dues for membership shall be set by the Board of Directors.

Article IV—Board of Directors

The administration and program of the organization shall be under the direction of the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors shall consist of twelve to eighteen members with 50% of the members required for a quorum. The Board shall appoint new members as needed. Directors shall commit themselves to attend at least bi-monthly scheduled meetings.

The Board of Directors may designate an Advisory Board of prominent local leaders of religious, civic, and community organizations which are representative of the demographics of the community served by MCCG.

Article V—Officers

The Officers of MCCG shall be: Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, each having the powers and responsibilities usual to such offices. The officers of the Board of Directors shall constitute the Executive Committee and be empowered to act on behalf of the Board where necessary, in lieu of a Board meeting. Officers shall be elected by the Steering Committee (Board of Directors + Advisory Board) for terms of two years and may serve for not more than three consecutive terms.

Article VI —Committees

The Board may establish or abolish such committees as are deemed necessary to carry out the activities of Michigan Catholics for the Common Good. The Chair shall designate the Chair and members of each committee taking into consideration those members of the organization who volunteer for committee assignment, the needs of the committee and the abilities of the members.

Article VII—Membership Meetings

Meetings of the members of Michigan Catholics for the Common Good shall be held at least annually and on the call of the Board of Directors. Advance notice and an agenda prepared by the Board shall be provided to all members at least two weeks before the meeting. Those in attendance shall constitute a quorum.

Article VIII—Amendments to The By-laws

These By-laws may be amended by a two thirds vote of the Board of Directors. Proposed amendments must be presented at a regularly scheduled meeting in the form in which they are to be considered. The amendments may then be adopted at the next regularly scheduled meeting.
